Black and grey wing on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large wing tattoo runs along the forearm, with individual feathers drawn in dark outline and filled with layered grey and black shading. The feathers fan out towards the wrist, giving the wing depth and a sense of movement. A gold watch and chunky gold bracelet sit at the wrist against a soft white fur background.

The barn owl had come off the wire on the Holme road, one wing folded wrong beneath her, and Dot Hallam knelt in the wet verge with the engine ticking behind her and did not touch it yet. Owls, she had told her students for thirty years, never look at you the way you expect. This one looked at the sky over the marsh as though someone had promised it a flight and forgotten.

She counted the flight feathers first, because counting steadied her hands. Ten primaries, pale at the base and dark at the tip, then the secondaries fanning back towards the body in soft grey bands, each one edged with a fine dark line she could have drawn with a ruler. Her father had taught her that a feather tells you how a bird has lived, which ones were worn and which were new. This one had been new until about eleven o'clock that morning.
The vet in Hunstanton was kind and quick and said what Dot had already known. She drove home with the owl wrapped in a horse blanket on the passenger seat, and when the kettle had boiled and gone cold she sat at the kitchen table with the ringing ledger open in front of her.
She pulled the longest primary free with two fingers, gently, the way you lift a stitch. Then she laid it flat on the page beside the date, under the column where she wrote the names of birds she had ringed and let go, and she left the line after it blank.
