Wing tattoo on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large wing with outlined primary and covert feathers runs diagonally down the forearm, with the tip near the wrist. The feathers are filled with soft grey and black shading that gives them depth, and the linework is dark and clean. The arm rests on white fur, with a gold watch and chain bracelet at the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the swift came in again this morning in a cardboard box marked BISCUITS in marker, which is how Mr Ahern labels anything he is ashamed of finding. Its left wing was folded wrong at the elbow, the flight feathers bunched like a closed fan. I spent two hours with tweezers and a magnifier, laying the wing flat on a folded tea towel and counting feathers the way you used to count stitches for me.

You will remember the old drawing pinned in the back of the bird book, the one with the outlined flights and the grey wash shading them darker toward the root. Ahern says that is how a wing should look from underneath, the feathers layered like roof slates, each one a little shadowed by the one before it. I thought about that all night while the bird sat under the heat lamp, deciding whether it wanted to live.

Around four the swift opened its eyes and glared at me. I did not take that as a good sign and I did not take it as a bad one. I wrapped it back in the towel, set the box on the windowsill where the wind off the reservoir could reach it, and wrote the time on the lid with a pen: 04:10, wing straight, still objecting.

The release at dawn was Ahern's idea, not mine. He said if it flew, we would open the sash before the gulls were up. When I came back at six the box was empty except for one primary feather lying across the lid, grey at the root and black at the tip, as if someone had ruled a line under the night and sent it on. I've pinned it above my desk. Come and see it when you can, and bring the good tea.
