Black and white cat tattoo on a limb
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A black and white cat with bright yellow eyes looks up from the centre of the design. It is surrounded by gold feather-like shapes, a red backdrop and a blue and red ornamental motif at the top. The bold black outlines and solid fills are shown in a fairly close crop on bare skin.

The tuxedo cat came to Harrow Fold the week the bell at St Aldhelm's cracked, sitting on the back of the carrier's cart as if it had paid for the ride. Nobody claimed it. Mrs Pargeter gave it a saucer of milk, and it drank without thanks, then walked the length of the village street with its tail straight up, looking into every window as though counting what was inside.

That autumn the feathers came. Gold ones, the length of a hand, turned up on the church step, in the leeks, caught in the wire of the hen run. Old Tom Vickers swore the magpies were moulting. His wife swept them into the coal scuttle and said nothing, because the cat sat on the sill each night with its yellow eyes open, watching the lane until the lamps went out.
In December the red came into the river. The dye works upstream had been shut since the war, but the water ran pink below the weir for three days, and the Pargeter boy fished a rusted hatbox out of the eddy. Inside, folded in oilcloth, was a map of the parish with a red cross at the mill and a small cat drawn beside it, its eyes coloured in with a pencil that had pressed too hard.
The cat was waiting on the mill step when the men came with their spades. It did not look at them. It looked up at the chimney, where a ring of gold feathers hung from the flue like a lamp shade, and then it closed its eyes. They found the box under the flagstones. Mrs Pargeter said afterwards that the feathers had been the village's own luck coming home. The cat climbed back onto the carrier's cart in spring and was not seen again.
