Black and white tribal leaf and geometric pattern
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a dense, symmetrical design of overlapping arcs filled with fern-like fronds, flower motifs, nested diamonds and stepped chevrons. The linework is crisp white on black, with stippled dotwork shading creating texture and depth across the background. The design is shown flat and filled edge to edge, with no body or skin visible.

Hold the lamp lower, Tomasz, or you'll throw your own shadow across the plate and I'll be scraping ink for a week. There. Look at that frond. It bends away from the arc as if it has somewhere better to be.

Mrs Dunning had cut her plates in that top-floor room above the chandler's for forty years, and she never once drew a line freehand. She laid a steel rule along the arcs, pricked the chevrons with a compass point, then stippled the dark ground dot by dot until the black went grey as a November sea. The commission that spring came from a widow in Robin Hood's Bay who wanted the pattern copied from her late husband's sea chest, every diamond in its place. Tomasz spent three nights on the fern fronds and was rather proud of himself.
When the proofs came off the press, the widow held the first one to the window and said nothing for a long time. Then she put a finger on a nested diamond near the centre, where a single dot sat a hair off the line. 'My husband's hand,' she said. 'He always slipped there.' Mrs Dunning had seen the dot and meant to correct it, but she didn't.
They pulled the widow's copy with the slip left in. Tomasz still thinks it a mistake, though he has since noticed that the widow kept that proof and the others went to the bin. Steady the lamp now. We have forty more to pull.
