Black argyle pattern on both calves
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows the lower legs of a person standing on a rubber mat in a shop, with a black diamond argyle pattern covering both calves from just below the knee to the ankle line. The diamonds are solid black with lighter skin showing between them, and the edges are sharp and evenly spaced, giving the look of argyle socks. The image is a casual, slightly angled shot with the top of the body and a shopping trolley cropped in, and no face is visible.

The net mender on the Kittiwake had one rule, and she gave it to every deckhand on the first morning out of Leith. No diamond is ever cut square. Dorrit Shaw held a length of tarred twine up to the grey light as she said it, then pulled the knot tight with her teeth, the way her mother had taught her in a Fife loft full of herring nets.

Tam was fourteen and thought the rule was about tidiness. He spent three weeks learning otherwise, counting meshes off the drum while the hull groaned and spray came over the rail in sheets. By the Faroes his diamonds were even enough that Dorrit stopped unpicking them, and she began leaving the tally board by the hatch with a chalk line for every row he finished.
Then the squall came off Cape Wrath at three in the morning. The trawl wire snapped and took a fathom of their best net over the side. Dorrit had them strip the spare drum and work by lantern on the wet deck, shouting the counts across the wind, and Tam found his hands moving on their own, over and under, diamond after diamond, because he had counted them so often in his sleep.
They hauled the net back at dawn with a full hold and a torn mouth sewn shut. Dorrit ran her thumb along the new row, found not one square corner, and chalked a diamond on the board beside the others. Tam asked if that was the end of the lesson. She said the lesson never ends, it just gets quieter.
