Black band rings on the ring finger
Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The left panel shows a thick, solid black band tattooed around the ring finger of a hand with dark hair on the wrist, against a wooden floor. The right panel shows a much thinner black line encircling the ring finger of a hand resting on a brown leather surface. Both tattoos are black ink with no shading or colour, and the photos are framed close to the hands.

The big top at Pellow's Travelling Show has more holes than canvas now, and you are the one who counts them each morning before the crowd arrives. Mr Ansell has not paid the feed man since Easter, and Duchess, the elephant, stands by the water trough watching you as though you owe her money. You know she is right.

On the last Saturday in September the ring-toss stall is the only thing still earning. Tom the ticket boy fetches a tin of black gloss from the wagon and asks if you can paint the poles before the council man comes to check the field. You do it with a sable brush, one band around each pole, thick at the base and thinning toward the top, the way the old ringmaster once chalked the edge of the sawdust ring.
Ansell comes out in his good coat, sees the poles, and says nothing for a long time. Then he twists a brass ring off his little finger, the one he bought in Blackpool the year the show made money, and drops it into the paint tin. It rings against the side like a bell. You understand that he means to sell it for the feed, and that he is letting you watch him decide.
That night you stand alone inside the empty ring. The poles look as though they were always meant to be dark at the waist, as if something had been tied there and later untied. Duchess lies down in the straw with a long sigh. By morning the wagons are gone and the field is bare, and the only mark left behind is a black band on the stake where the big top used to hang.
