The night Edith Hollis forgot the sugar, the black cat came down off the rafters and sat on the tray of cupcakes as if she meant to be counted among them. Edith swept at her with a flour cloth. Mab did not move. She only looked at the window, where a pink light had started to climb over the chimneys of Coldharbour Lane, and blinked her green eyes slowly, the way a clock might if it could.

Everyone on the lane knew the old saying about the heart-keeper. A city, it went, is held together by whoever stays awake to mind its warm things. A stray had once carried a heart of red glass across the rooftops to a girl left out in the snow, and when the girl was saved the cat would not go back to the river. Each night since, Mab had kept watch over the ovens and the sleeping street, and each night she carried a small pink heart in her paws and set it down where the frost lay thickest.

That night the frost came early. Edith found the pink heart pressed into the frosting, beside three smaller ones, and understood that the cat had been carrying it for her and not for the lane. Her husband had gone to sea in October and had not written since. She took the cupcake to the window and ate it slowly while the cat watched, and when the first bell rang over the roofs, Mab stepped off the tray and let herself be lifted into a warm lap.
