French bulldog in a kissing booth on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A black French bulldog peeks through red curtains beneath a wooden sign reading KISSING BOOTH, with pink hearts, an orange heart and a pink 25 cent tag at the lower edges. The dog is shaded in greys with a bold dark outline, while the curtains, sign and tags use flat red, orange, pink and teal. The design fills the frame of the thigh with the subject centred and the lettering curved across the top.

Pudding took the coins from the tin with her teeth, which is more than the lads from the amusements could manage, and then she winked. Every customer on Gullhaven pier stopped for that wink. Fishermen, nurses off shift, a man in a wedding suit who had clearly lost a bet, all of them paid their 25 pence and waited for the red curtain to twitch.

The booth stood at the landward end, where the pier bent towards the lighthouse, and I ran it with my nephew Tomasz, who could not be trusted with change. Tomasz liked the girls from the cannery. I liked the keeper, Mr Aske, who came down every Thursday at six and never once asked for a kiss. He paid his quarter, then stood with his palm flat on the wooden sign, reading it like a letter from someone he'd lost touch with.
One October he didn't come. The wind swung north and the sea came over the rail, and by Friday the light had been dark two nights. Pudding sat at the curtain with her ears up, watching the path, the tin unopened in front of her. I told myself she was only being a dog about it.
On the Saturday she dragged the tin to the edge of the boards, nosed it over the rail, and would not come back until I walked out with her along the shingle to the lighthouse steps. Aske was sitting on the bottom stair with a bandaged hand and two quarters held in his good one. He grinned at her, she winked back, and I swear the lamp came on behind us before I'd let go of the lead.
