Grey cat holding a pale fish on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A grey cat with yellow eyes and a raised tail holds a pale fish against its body, with small blue tear drops beside the fish. The design uses bold black outlines and smooth grey shading on the cat, with flat skin-toned fill for the fish. The tattoo sits on the outer upper thigh and fills most of the frame against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The grey tom came down the fish row at the hour when the river mist was still lifting off the reeds, and he came for my perch the way he always did, low and unhurried, as though the stall belonged to him and I were the one paying rent on it. I threw a clod of wet mud. He did not drop the fish. He settled it against his chest the way a mother holds a babe, pale belly up, its gills still moving, and looked at me over the top of it with those yellow eyes until I felt foolish for having shouted.

I followed him, because a woman who sells fish for a living cannot let a thief walk off with her best catch without at least learning where he sleeps. He went through the mud-brick lanes past the potters and the dye vats, tail up like a standard, until he reached the last house before the marsh. Inside, on a mat by the doorway, lay a girl of perhaps six summers, too thin and too hot, with a fever that had kept down no bread for three days. Her mother knelt beside her, indigo still staining her fingers from the cloth she had been working, and when she saw the fish she wept without a sound. Her tears ran down her cheeks in blue streaks, and the cat set the perch down on the mat with great care, as if he had been asked.

The broth I made from it that evening was thin and sweet, and the girl kept it down. I went back to my stall the next morning with a head full of stories I did not intend to tell, and found the cat already waiting on my step, licking one paw.

I still take a half-measure of salt from the grey tom's share each morning, and he still walks off with a fish, but now I let him. Some debts are only paid in the shape of a fish, carried carefully through the lanes.
