Black cat and paw prints on upper chest
Chest · Mixed · Photo
A solid black cat silhouette with a curled tail and a simple stylised face climbs vertically across the skin. Above it, a trail of black paw prints leads up to a small red heart, and the bold, clean shapes are set against pale skin in natural daylight.

The snow stopped on the third day, but the road over Harrow Pass stayed shut, and Maud Tennant had counted the flour twice. Her grandson Ned came down the back stairs with his cheeks red from the cold and said the black cat was on the landing again, sitting in the exact middle of the top step as though she had paid for it.

Nobody owned the cat. She had come up the valley the spring before, thin as a poker, and taken to the inn the way water takes to a low place. Each morning there were paw prints in the new snow across the yard, starting at the gate and running to the kitchen door. Each morning Maud swept them off the step, and each morning they came back.
On the seventh morning the prints did not stop at the kitchen. They climbed the stable wall, up onto the sill of the old loft window, and the cat was waiting there with her tail curled round her feet. Maud went up the ladder after her with the lamp in her teeth, and found under the eaves a tin box with her husband's name scratched on the lid. Inside was a red glass heart and a note in his square hand: Keep a light in the window for the pass.
She set the lamp on the sill facing the hills. By dusk the cat had gone down the ladder the way she came, and the prints trailing away over the drift were already filling with snow. Before midnight a light answered from the top of the pass, and at first light a man on a mule came down through the drifts, leading the rest of them behind him.
