Dear Mr Dunmore,

The cat is on my doormat again, curled into a neat black comma, and I have given up trying to move her. You will remember her from the fourth-floor landing. Mrs Pollard calls her Charming, though Charming has never once come when called. The lad in flat 14 insists she is Nasty, and he may have a point, because she sat on his post last Tuesday and would not get off until he apologised to her.

Mrs Pollard has been sticking index cards on the doors, one for each of the cats who come up the stairwell when the lift is out. Cute, Charming, Nasty, and a bigger one with a grey stripe she calls Sir. I have not told her there are only two that are truly ours. The rest wander in from the car park, where the bins are, and sleep on whatever is warmest. Last month somebody left a folded note on the stairs that read You stand like a cat, come to my heart kissingly, in handwriting like a schoolboy's. Nobody has claimed it.

The night the power went in the block, I sat on the stairs with a torch and a flask, and she came down out of the dark and lay against my shin without asking. I did not move for an hour. Nobody on this floor has sat with me that long since Eileen went, and I found I did not mind a cat doing it.

So if you are passing, do not bring the cat carrier. Just leave the door on the latch. She knows the way in. I have decided she can keep the mat.

Yours, Edna
