Black cat silhouette wearing a crown
Black and grey · Photo
A seated cat silhouette in solid black ink, with whiskers, a curled tail and a crown topped by a small cross. The fill has a subtle speckled texture, and the crown is a simple outline shape against the body of the cat. The cat sits centred on a plain background of skin in a close, evenly lit photograph.

The toll-keeper at Harrow Gap had a wife who had died and a black cat who had not, and between them the pass was kept. Carters paid their coppers to the man, but it was the cat who decided who went through when the snow came down, sitting on the gatepost with its tail wrapped round its feet until the sky cleared or did not.

One February a royal clerk came over from the lowland with a velvet cushion strapped to his saddle. He carried a small crown of tarnished silver with a cross set on top, meant for a child who would one day be a king. The storm caught him at the gate. He slept in the keeper's kitchen and left the crown on the post with the cushion beneath it, and when the keeper woke the cat was sitting under the crown with its ears forward, as if it had been measured for it.
The clerk wanted it back. The keeper said the cat had not asked his leave, and the clerk, who had ridden four days in the wind, did not think that worth arguing. But the snow had buried the path. Only the cat knew the line of the cairns, and it walked ahead of the horses, stopping at each stone, until they reached the low fields. When the clerk turned in his saddle to thank it, the cat had already gone back up into the white.
Years later the child was crowned, and the lowland court sent a plain ledger to Harrow Gap with a toll exemption written in a careful hand, for the pass and the cat who kept it. Every winter after, the keeper set a saucer of milk on the gatepost and a coin beside it, and the cat, whatever the weather, sat above both and took its due.
