Black cat silhouette tattoo on skin

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a stylised black cat in silhouette, seated with its head turned to one side and its tail curling up at the back. The design is filled solid black with smooth edges and no visible shading or linework, and it sits centred on pale, lightly textured skin. The plain black ink against the skin gives a clean, graphic look.

The cat came to the mill at Hollin Bridge the winter the river froze to the stones. Nobody in the village had ever seen it before, and nobody would say whose it was. It sat on the sill of the drying room with its back to the room and its head turned toward the water, as if it were listening for a boat that was already late.

Marjorie Penhallow, who kept the post and the mill ledgers, said it was a waste of good milk to feed a thing that did not come when called. But she left a saucer out anyway, and by March the saucer was always empty and the cat was always there, its long tail curled up behind it like a question nobody had asked yet.

In the spring the miller's boy went missing on the far side of the weir. They searched the reeds for two days. On the third morning the cat was waiting at the end of the lane, sitting in the road, and when Marjorie followed it down through the alders it walked ahead of her without once looking back, stopping only where the bank had slid. The boy was there, wet and cross and holding a coil of rope, and he said the cat had sat on his chest all night so he would not sink into the cold.

The cat was gone by the next full moon. Marjorie wrote nothing in the ledger about it, but she never again put out milk for anything else, and when people asked why, she only said that some creatures keep their own accounts and do not need you to balance them.
