Sitting cat tattoo behind the ear

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small black cat sits facing away from the viewer with its tail curling out to the left, set against bare skin on the neck behind the ear. The cat is rendered in solid black ink with some lighter gaps and fine detail in the fur, and the tattoo is the only colour in the image. The tight crop on the ear and hair places the small design at the centre of the frame.

You learn the ship's cat by her back, because she never troubles to face the company. Mrs Okonedo, the cook aboard the Halcyon Mary, swears she is the same grey tabby that came up the gangway at Liverpool, but you have your doubts, since the animal has been black as tar since the Azores, sitting on the forward hatch with her tail curled out to the left as if she has heard a joke nobody else aboard is clever enough to tell.

Three weeks out, the wind dropped and the sea went flat as slate. Nobody slept well. The bosun wanted the spare topsail over the side just for something to do, and the second mate counted biscuits twice a day, muttering the numbers under his breath. You found the cat watching the horizon the way she always did, as though something were coming up behind the swell that only she had been told about.

On the ninth morning there was a smudge of land to the north. Nobody cheered. Mrs Okonedo fed the cat a whole pilchard and said nothing, which from the cook amounted to a ceremony. The cat rose, stretched, and walked the length of the rail without once turning round.

When the anchor finally dropped off Falmouth, she was already sitting on the quay, back to the ship, tail curled, watching the gulls come down over the water as if she had been the one steering us in all along.
