Cat silhouette tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black outline shows a cat seen from behind, sitting upright with its ears pointed and its tail curling at the base. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is set against plain skin. The arm fills most of the frame, with a wooden floor and some clothing blurred in the background.

You notice the cat on the stile before you notice that the stile has lost its top rail. It sits with its back to the village, ears pointed at the dark beeches, and it does not turn when Mrs Pell calls it in for the evening milk. Every dusk it is there, a black shape cut against the tree line, its tail curled round its feet like a question nobody has yet thought to ask.

The summer the well goes dry, you follow it. Past the last cottage, past the charcoal burners' ring where nothing grows, the path thins to a thread. You keep your eyes on that tail. The cat never hurries and never lets you close the gap, and when you finally stop to catch your breath, it is sitting on a root ten paces ahead, still with its back to you, as though it has been waiting for you to finish arguing with your own feet.

The forest does not frighten you. What unsettles you is the quiet at its heart, where a spring rises clear as glass beneath a fallen oak and the water has a faint taste of iron and rain. The cat drinks first, neatly, then sits back on its haunches and waits. You fill your father's leather bucket and carry it out in the failing light, and the cat walks ahead the whole way, never once looking round.

You pour the water down the well at dawn. The next evening the cat is on the stile again, but it has turned to face the village, its tail lying flat and still for the first time, and it watches the lamps come on one by one in the cottages as though counting them home.
