Black cat silhouettes with yin yang symbols
Black and grey · Flash
This collage shows nine black cat silhouette designs on white paper, each with a different pose, including sitting, standing, and stretched tails. Several cats contain a yin yang symbol in the body or tail, drawn with solid black and clean white areas. The solid black fills and simple outlines are set against plain white backgrounds, with the designs spaced across the image.

Dear Marguerite,

I found the old tin of Mum's drawing pens in the loft yesterday, the ones with the cracked caps, and I sat on the boards for an hour cutting cats out of black card with her nail scissors. Nine of them, all different. The one with the tail curled round like a question mark was my favourite, the one she always said looked like it was waiting for a bus. I did the yin yang inside each one with a compass and far too much patience, one white dot in the black, one black dot in the white, and then I laid them out on the landing carpet like a tarot spread.
You'll remember she never could decide which side of the circle she belonged to. She'd say the dark bit was for Sunday evenings and the light bit was for everything else. The cats seemed to agree with her. Two of them are sitting on the white half and look terribly smug about it, and the third has its black body folded so tight round its own dot that it looks like it's trying to hide from the reunion invitation on the mantelpiece.
I'm going, by the way. Thursday, the Crown at Harrow Lane, half six. Bring the photos from the netball tour if you still have them. I'll bring the scissors, because Mum's were the good ones and I've not had the heart to put them back in the drawer.
Love, Fran
P.S. The big one, the stretched-out cat with the tail like a pulled ribbon, I've taped above the kettle. Every time I boil it she seems to be leaning in to listen.
