Black cat sitting on stacked books
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A cartoon black cat with wide, round eyes and a curled tail sits on a stack of two books. The cat is filled with solid black ink and soft grey shading, and the books have hatched lines along their pages and spines. The design is centred on a plain, lightly freckled background of skin.

The reunion is on Saturday in the old gym, which still smells of the same floor polish. Dawn Pritchard has organised a raffle and wants everyone to bring something for the table. I am bringing the battered copy of The Wind in the Willows that Ruskin used as a pillow for three terms, its spine still chewed at one corner. Nobody else will know why it matters.
Last week I found a doodle in the back of my 1994 exercise book, a cat on a stack of books with a tail that curled into a question mark. I sat on the kitchen floor for an hour looking at it. I had drawn him so badly, with those huge startled eyes, and yet every line of him was right. Ruskin always looked as if he had just been told a secret he did not believe.
Tell Dawn I am sorry about the tin of toffees. I ate all the orange ones and blamed the cat, and I suspect the cat has forgiven me. If you are there on Saturday, come and find me by the book table. I will be the one sitting on the pile, pretending I am not waiting for someone to start crying.
