Sleeping cat line tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line drawing shows a cat with closed eyes, pointed ears, whiskers and a small nose, its tail curling into a spiral. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoo sits on pale skin against a soft, out-of-focus background. The black and white photograph is cropped to a tall frame with black bars at the top and bottom.

The cat had been asleep on the lost property shelf since Tuesday, curled so tight that Mrs Okafor at the ticket desk swore she was a tea cosy someone had left behind. I found her on Thursday night, when I came in to log the last train and the radiator ticked like a clock nobody wanted to wind.

I told her she couldn't stay. I said it the way my dad used to tell the dog, flat and kind. She opened one eye, decided I was not worth the effort, and closed it again. Her tail was wrapped round her nose in a loose spiral, the way you'd coil a hosepipe you meant to come back for. Outside, the 22:40 pulled out for Crewe with a blue carrier bag caught in the gap of its doors.
On Friday a man in a wet anorak came to the window and asked if we had found a grey cat in a wicker basket. He had a photograph of her looking far more awake and a name, Biscuit. He said she had slipped off the 18:05 from Shrewsbury while he stepped out for a coffee, and that she always seemed to know the stop before the driver did. I believed him, mostly because she lifted her head at the word basket and then, very deliberately, put it down again.
He came back on Monday with two coffees and the basket at his feet, and stood under the clock at six past six. Biscuit walked down from the shelf in a slow curl, stopped at the yellow line, and waited for the doors to open. Then she stepped into the basket, turned round twice, and settled with her tail curled into the same spiral I had been looking at all week. I wrote claimed in the logbook and, under it in smaller letters, the time.
