Cat face tattoo on a wrist

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of a cat's face sits on the inside of a wrist, drawn with clean outlines and simple shading on the black and white markings. Yellow eyes and a pink nose add small touches of colour. A real black and white cat sleeps against the arm in soft natural light, and the patterned bedding behind is out of focus.

The bench was already occupied when Maud came down the allotment path with her tin of ink and a blunt pencil behind one ear. Tuppence had claimed the spot where the sun lay longest, one white paw flung over the edge of a potato sack, his black moustache twitching at a wasp that was thinking about it.

Dev, the new lad from the community plot, had asked for a likeness he could carry about. "Something small," he said, "that I can keep on me when I'm up a ladder." Maud sat beside the cat and drew him in a handful of strokes, the ears first, then the dark cap over the head, then the yellow eyes, which she filled with a dab of marigold ink because it was the nearest yellow to hand.

Dev took the drawing to a man in town who did small work in a back room behind the launderette. A week later he came back up the path with his sleeve pushed to the elbow, rubbing at a wrap of cling film. Tuppence had not moved. He was still asleep in the same square of sun, one paw crossed over the other, as if he had only been waiting to see whether the sketch was good enough to keep.

"He's not bothered," Dev said. "Says it's his face, so it's his business." Maud laughed, and the real Tuppence opened one eye, looked at the drawn cat now living on the inside of Dev's wrist, and shut it again, satisfied that somebody had finally got the moustache right.
