Black cat with crescent moon and heart locket
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A black cat looks up and to the side, wearing a crescent moon and a small pale orb on its head, set against swirling green clouds. Below, purple crystals rise behind an ornate gold heart-shaped locket holding a grey cloud, moon, sun and green stone. Bold outlines, smooth black shading and saturated colour give it a neo-traditional look, and the image shows the tattoo repeated three times across the upper arm.

The frost had got into the water trough again, and Maud Pryce broke the skin of ice with the heel of her boot while the cat watched from the top of the gate. It was a black cat with amber eyes and no name the farm would admit to. The men called it the Vicar, because it sat so still on the stone wall on Sundays, and because nobody had ever seen it eat.

The locket turned up in the lower field after the thaw, lying in the furrow where the plough had skipped. It was gold, shaped like a heart, with the hinge rusted half shut. She worked it open with the bread knife at the kitchen table while the stove ticked. Inside, painted no bigger than a fingernail, sat a grey cloud, a crescent moon, a small sun with a face, and a green glass bead that rattled loose into her palm.
The cat came in through the scullery flap as if it had been invited, hopped onto the table, and looked past her at the window, where the snow had gone the colour of slate. Maud held out the locket. It turned its head away, toward the field, and kept turning until it was looking straight at the ridge where a thin moon was climbing. She put on her coat and took the lantern down from its hook.
At the old well behind the hedge, the iron cap was furred with hoar frost, and in its centre was a heart-shaped plate with an empty setting, the same size as the locket. She pressed the locket into place and it clicked as though it had been waiting. The cat sat down beside her boot and purred once, low, and the lantern light caught the green bead. Come March, she would tell the men the well had always looked like that.
