The cat came through the Sveti Nikola crossing in the back of a flour lorry, which was how I knew it had not been born in any country I recognised. Every other creature I had searched that winter was tucked into a spare tyre or a sack of potatoes, shivering and hiding from the dogs. This one sat on the tailboard under the floodlight and washed a paw as though the whole customs shed had been built for its convenience.

The driver, Ilia Trenkov, swore on his mother's grave he had never seen it before. I didn't believe him, and I didn't need to. Its eyes caught the lamp and threw back red, the same red as the paint on the barrier poles, and on its brow sat a small white cross set the wrong way up, the way my grandmother said the old priest in Vrana hung the bell rope when he was angry with God. She told me that a cat marked like that had walked out of a church, and that it could only be let go on the far side of a line, never turned back on the near one.

So I stamped the manifest DENIED in the sergeant's ink, lifted the pole myself, and stood aside. The cat stepped down, crossed the white paint without looking at it, and vanished into the dark pines beyond the fence.

In the morning the sergeant showed me the ledger. My stamp had come up red on the page, a ring of it around the word DENIED, and beneath it someone had written in a hand I did not know: one passenger, no name, westbound.
