The apples came down a fortnight early this year, after that hot week in August, and Dad says the Bramleys will go sour if we leave them another day. I have been up the ladders since six. The cat has taken to sitting on the bottom rung and watching me with those great round eyes, as if she is waiting for me to fall. Her name is still Biscuit, though you always said it was a daft name for a cat with that face. She has stripes across her forehead like someone drew them with a fine brush and kept going until the paper ran out.

Last Tuesday she dragged a field mouse into the press shed and left it under the cider barrel, neat as a parcel. Dad swore at her and then laughed, and then he went quiet and sat on the upturned crate for a good ten minutes, which he never does. I think he was remembering Mum and the grey cat she had before, the one that followed her round the Bramley tree every September. I didn't say anything. You would have said something, and then he would have gone off and mended the gate.

The sale is Saturday. The man from the cider house in Ledbury wants forty crates, and I told him he could have them if he came himself and carried them. Come home for it. Bring the girls. Biscuit will sit on your lap if you let her, and she will watch you the whole time with those eyes, the way she watches everything, as if she is working out what you owe her.
