Black ink lettering across a palm
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of an open palm facing the camera, with stylised black letters inked across the palm and a small angular mark on the inner wrist. A black cord hangs over the hand with a white lattice-patterned pendant resting near the wrist. The lettering uses thin, uneven strokes in solid black ink, and the plain grey background keeps focus on the hand.

The shutter on the signal room had been painted over so many times it would no longer close, so Mags Penhale kept the lamp burning all night and let the harbour read what it liked. Her father had taught her the code when she was eleven, tapping it on the kitchen table with a teaspoon: short for the boats that were home, long for the ones that weren't, a gap for the ones that had gone down. He never explained the three small marks he added at the end of every message. She only understood them after he died, when she found a scrap of paper folded inside his tin of pipe tobacco.

On the last night of the herring season, a message came in from the Kestrel, a boat nobody had seen since March. It spelled out a K, then a 4, then a 1, and then the three marks. Mags knew the numbers were a berth on the old chart, forty-one fathoms past the breakwater, where the rusted lattice of lobster pots still stood in rows. She had the lamp in one hand and her grandmother's silver grille hung round her neck on a black cord, and she felt it warm against her collarbone as she worked the key.
She did not answer straight away. The lighthouse hummed behind her and the tide dragged at the stones. Then she sent back the three marks, the way her father would have, and waited.
The reply came after twenty minutes: one long tap, and then the lamp out on the water went dark for good.
