Black lettering reading BAD on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with dark nail polish is raised towards the camera, showing a black tattoo of the word BAD across the inner wrist. The letters are bold, with thick, slightly uneven strokes and interlocking joins, giving a hand-drawn, graffiti-like feel. The tattoo is solid black ink on a light background of a cream panelled door.

Brother Anselm leaned over my desk the morning the Psalter was due and sighed like a bellows with a hole in it. 'Your letters crawl, Tobias,' he said. 'They look like ivy that has lost its wall.' He was right. I had spent the week copying the Lauds psalms in a hand so cramped that the infirmarian could not read it, and in the margin beside the feast of Saint Clement I had drawn a hare with its ears laid flat. Then, without asking my fingers, I wrote the word my father shouted across the yard whenever I broke something: BAD.

Brother Anselm did not laugh. He carried the sheet to Abbot Walter, who read it by the window with his spectacles pushed up, and I was sent to the wash-house to scrub the refectory pots for a month. The lye stung. The brothers said nothing kind at supper, but Brother Hugh slid me the heel of his loaf, and old Osric, the cellarer, who could not read at all, nodded at the hare every time he passed the door, as if it were a saint he had once met.
On the last night of my penance I took the ink pot and a strip of spare linen, and I went over the letters again, thicker, joined at the stems so the B leaned into the A and the A kicked into the D, until the word stood up off the cloth like a man refusing to kneel. In the morning the strip was pinned to the scriptorium board. Beneath it, in the abbot's small upright hand, someone had written: Keep it. Bring the Psalter back to the desk, and make the hare run.
