Small heart outline on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart drawn in a single thin black outline, with a loop curling from its lower point and two leaf-like strokes rising from its top. The linework is even and unshaded, and the ink is solid black with no colour. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame on a pale forearm, with a teal and white striped fabric visible at the edges and a warm, slightly faded photo filter.

Nell,

We are three weeks out from Simon's Bay and the water has gone the colour of pewter, so I am writing this on the back of the manifest while the mate's watch thinks I am checking the bilge. The cutting is still alive. I have kept it in the galley where the heat from the range is steadiest, and Cook has stopped calling it a waste of a tin and started asking after it in the mornings, which I take as a kind of blessing.

You will remember the pear tree behind your mother's wash-house, the one that never fruited properly until the year the pump froze. Its pears came out the shape of little hearts, lopsided at the base, with a point that tapered into a stalk like a loose thread. I took the shoot off the bottom branch the morning before we sailed and bound it in wet flannel and a length of your red garden twine, looping the twine twice around the lowest bud so it would not shake loose on the swell. Do you remember how you said that was too much string for a bit of wood?

Yesterday a squall took the mainsail's leech clean off and we spent a night on the pumps. In the lamp light I unwrapped the cutting to check it and found two new leaves had pushed out at the top, curled like a pair of hands, as if it had decided to stay put regardless of us. I sat on the hatch and laughed until the second mate came up to see if I had gone mad.

I will bring it to you still tied, and we will plant it where the wash-house wall gets the afternoon sun. Keep the twine for me until then.

Tom
