Black question mark tattoo on skin

Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of a single bold question mark with a solid round dot beneath it, filled in solid black ink. The curved hook and stem have smooth, even edges and the dot is a clean circle. The design sits centred against plain, pale skin with soft natural lighting and no other elements in the frame.

You find the first one on the orchard wall on the Tuesday after the wasps got into the Discovery crates. Someone has scratched it into the lime mortar with a bent nail: a hook curling over, a long stem, and a dot pressed so hard that the stone around it has chipped away. The wall is older than the farmhouse, and the question looks as if it has been waiting there for years.

At the farm shop, Mrs Pell wipes her hands on her apron and says her husband Ted used to leave marks like that in the tally book, one for every row he thought needed a second look. She fetches it from under the till. The pages are soft with damp and smell of cider. Most entries are crate counts in pencil. Near the back, in the same blunt hand, there is a question mark for every August since 1979, and the last one has a dot but no hook, as though the pencil ran out.

That evening you walk the Bramley rows with a torch and find another one carved into the underside of a low branch, fresh enough that the wood is still pale inside the lines. Beneath it someone has tied a length of red ribbon. You stand under the tree for a long time, listening to the wasps settle, trying to work out whether the question is meant for the orchard or for you.

In the morning you climb the ladder, pick the highest apples by hand and drop them one by one into the basket. Halfway down the last row you stop, untie the ribbon and fold it into your coat pocket. It is the only answer you have been given, and you find you are glad of it.
