Small black Leo zodiac symbol tattoo
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo shows a stylised curl shape that resembles the Leo zodiac symbol, drawn as a single continuous line with a loop at the top and a tail curling down. The linework is solid and even, with no shading or colour. The tattoo sits centred in the frame against plain skin, with a soft reddish area around it that may be part of the healing process.

The plotter on Deck Nine had been dead for eleven years when my aunt asked me to coax one last line out of it. She was ninety-one and stubborn, and she wanted the old star chart redrawn before the Halvard turned for the Gliese approach. Nobody aboard had drawn by hand since the first generation. I found a stylus in the tool locker, wrapped in grey cloth, and a sheet of resin paper that still smelled of the orchard hydroponics.

Her instruction was simple. Start at the bright star in the lion's chest, follow the mane round in one loop, then let the pen drop down into a tail that curls to the last faint point. Never lift it. 'If you lift,' she said, 'the lion goes to sleep and the ship goes with it.' I laughed. She did not. Her hand, bone-thin and steady, rested over mine while we drew the first loop, and the stylus kept its own counsel as it went round.
When the tail finished I looked up and saw that the whole ship had gone quiet, the way it does when the engines are doing something important. Aunt Ines tapped the paper, then the bulkhead beside it, where a thin seam of old copper ran from floor to ceiling. 'It's the same line,' she said. 'They laid it under the paint before we left, so the ship would always know its heading.' I had walked past that seam a thousand times. That night the hum in it sounded almost like breathing.
She died in the spring, in the orchard, with the paper folded small in her palm. We buried her beside the apple rows, and I kept the stylus. Now and then, on night watch, I draw the lion again with my eyes shut, one unbroken stroke from heart to tail, and I never lift the pen.
