Black rabbit mask with numbers design

Black and grey · Flash

A bold black stencil-style drawing of a stylised rabbit mask with long, pointed ears, a solid dark face and a row of small teeth-like shapes along the lower jaw. Beneath it, the handwritten numerals 28:06:42:12 are drawn in thin black marker on a plain white background. The linework is loose and hand-drawn, with the mask using solid fills and the numerals using open strokes, and the composition is centred and vertical.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody claims anything from the lost property cupboard at Harrowby Junction after the first month, so when the grey hatbox came in with a rabbit mask inside, I logged it as miscellaneous and forgot it. Mrs Achterberg, who has run the ticket hall since before the electronic gates, took one look at the mask and crossed herself, which I had never seen her do for anything else.

The mask is heavier than it looks, black card gone soft at the edges, its long ears folded back like a startled hare's. Someone had written numbers on the inside of the lid in thin marker: 28:06:42:12. I took it for a platform code until I checked the timetables and found no service that left at that minute in any year the board has shown. Still, the numbers stayed with me. On nights when the late northbound sits in the loop with its lights off, I catch myself counting the colons the way you count stairs in the dark.

Last Tuesday the night porter swore he'd seen the mask on the bench by platform four, ears pricked, facing the empty track. I told him it was a prank. Then I went down myself at ten to midnight. The bench was bare, but the signal ahead had turned green for a train nobody had booked, and from somewhere behind the timber fence came a knocking, long, long, short, like a handle being tested by someone patient.

I carried the hatbox back to the cupboard and wrote a new label. Under Found Item I put the time I had found it. Under Claimed By I left the space empty, because the box was already waiting on the shelf with its lid lifted, as if someone had only stepped out for a moment.
