Black silhouette figure on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a standing figure with wild, tousled hair and simple rectangular limbs fills most of the inner forearm. The shape is filled with flat black ink with no visible shading or fine linework, giving a bold, graphic look. The plain skin around it and the grey top at the edge of the frame keep the focus on the tattoo.

Mags had the shooting gallery's tin men down to the last three before the rain came in off the car park. The rest had been knocked flat by the lads from the dodgems, who could not hit a barn door but never missed a chance to show off. She swept wet sawdust off the counter with the side of her hand and counted the pellets left in the tin.

The target she liked best sat at the far end, a black cut-out of a man on a sheet of iron, hair blown up as if he had just stepped out of a gale. Her father had painted him the summer before he went into hospital in Dundee, one flat coat of ink with no face, because he said a man you could not see was harder to hit and more honest about it. Nobody had ever knocked him over. The hinge rope had rusted to the colour of stewed tea.
On the last night of the season a boy in a cap with a bad cough paid his coins and asked for all the pellets. Mags handed him the tin and went to the van to make a brew, and when she came back he was standing in front of the far target with his hands in his pockets, not shooting at all. "He's waiting for someone," the boy said. Mags looked at the black figure, its long plain legs and the hair lifting in the wind, and understood that she had been waiting too.
She gave the boy a bag of sugared almonds and told him the gallery was closed. Then she lifted the iron man off his hook, carried him to the van, and set him face out on the passenger seat, where he could watch the road.
