Black swirl with blue paw prints
Other · Mixed · Photo
A black, flowing line curves to form an open heart-like shape, with a tail sweeping out to the lower left. Blue paw prints with heart-shaped pads sit along the upper edge, with small toe dots scattered beside them. The black line is solid and smooth with some soft shading, while the paws are filled in a lighter blue, set against lightly lit skin.

Ruth had been climbing since the first grey light, and the wind off the top of Cold Gate had stopped feeling cold some time ago and become simply a fact. Her father's crook was in one hand and a torch that no longer worked was in the other. Moss had gone up after the ewes on Tuesday, the way she always did, and Tuesday was three days gone now.

Then she found the tracks. They came up out of a drift below the wall, small and deliberate, each pad pressed clean into the crust. Where the snow had blown thin the prints showed as dark hollows, and where the ground was bare they caught the blue of the sky and seemed to glow. Ruth knelt, pressed her glove into one, and laughed out loud, because the dog had walked a line that curled round on itself like a question mark, looping back to the stone before heading out again toward the pass.
She followed it for an hour. The path swung in a wide arc around the old lead mine, bent back on itself twice, and every time Ruth thought it had led her somewhere pointless, it returned to the same place: a small hollow out of the wind where the snow was flattened in a circle, and in the middle of it, curled nose to tail, a black and white bundle that lifted its head and thumped its tail once against the stone.
Ruth sat down beside her in the snow. "You daft article," she said, and Moss pushed her cold nose into Ruth's palm as if she had only stepped out for a minute. Below them the valley lights were coming on one by one, and the tracks they had made together looked, from up there, exactly like a heart.
