Black fine line tattoo of a paw print with curling swirl stems on the inside of a wrist.

Paw print and swirl vine on a wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A black paw print with four toe pads and a larger main pad sits beside a set of thin, curling vine-like swirls. The linework is clean and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The tattoo is framed in the centre of a close photo of the inside of a wrist, with the pale skin and surrounding background softly lit.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dog is already at the cage when you get there, nose pressed to the gap in the gate, tail going like a fan. Nobody taught Bess to wait. Your father swears she can smell a shift change from the top of Harker Lane, and on the mornings the hooter sounds early you find yourself believing him.

Down in the drift the dust lies so fine it takes a print the way flour takes a thumb. Bess runs ahead of the lamps, and each time she stops, four small pads and the broad one behind them stamp themselves into the black. You follow her marks along the haulage road because the men say a dog never wanders into the fall, and because following a dog is easier than thinking about what the roof is doing above you.

Then the cage stops short. The signal bell goes twice and nothing moves. Forty minutes later the rescue party is still at the top, and Bess is lying across the threshold of the roadway, pushing her nose at the place where the prints end. You sit down beside her in the cold and keep your hand on her ruff. Somewhere above, the winding wheel creaks as the wind works through the cables.

Years later the headgear is gone and bramble has run up the stumps where the wheel stood, curling through the iron like handwriting nobody bothered to finish. You walk Harker Lane on a grey morning with no dog at your heel. In the frost by the gate there is one small print, four toes and a heel, and then nothing at all. You stand there a long while, reading it.
