Dearest Ilse, the snow has shut the Scharfenjoch since Tuesday, so the carrier will have to wait for his mule to dig out, and I have time to answer your three letters at once. Yes, I kept the lamp burning on the north side as Father asked. No, I did not let the goats into the chapel again, whatever Herr Brandl tells the priest.

Last week a boy came up from Sankt Anton with a wrapped bundle. Inside was a plait of rope, dark and oiled, the way our grandmother braided the bell-ropes into a crown for feast days. Someone had threaded red wool through it. He said a man in Innsbruck had left it at the inn for the keeper of the pass, and that the keeper was to wear it or burn it, he did not care which. I thought of you, because you always hated being asked to stand still while I pinned your hair.

I did not burn it. I sat by the stove and worked the rope apart with the knife until the wool came free, and under the wool, cut into the inside of the last loop, was a single letter in the black hand the notaries use: a tall F with a crossbar like a locked gate. Fenna, I said aloud, and the stove answered with a crack. It was our mother's name, though she never used it after she married. I have not decided what it means.

The wind has dropped. The lamp on the far ridge is still lit, so someone is awake over there. I will bring the rope down with the first thaw, and you can tell me whether you want the crown back. Keep the letter. Your loving sister, Maren.
