Cartoon blonde woman holding a banana
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A bold cartoon-style woman with long blonde hair and rosy cheeks wears a yellow plaid jacket and holds a banana in both hands. Pink bow-like shapes frame her head and shoulders, and the design sits on a fleshy forearm against a teal background. Heavy black outlines and flat fills in yellow, pink and tan give it a graphic, pop-art look.

The fair came to Cadwell Green the week after the frost, and Nell Parrish came with it, pushing a barrow of bananas nobody in the village had ever eaten. The farmers said they looked like wax. The vicar's wife said they would bring the wasps. Nell kept her yellow plaid jacket buttoned and her pink ribbons tied tight, and she sold them at a penny each, peeled, to anyone brave enough to try.

By the Thursday the Gaffer had taken his cut of every bunch, and he came to the barrow with his hat in one hand and a bill in the other. He said she owed the show for the pitch, the lamp oil and the ribbons. Nell said the bananas were paid for and the ribbons were her mother's. She counted out the coins on the wagon tail, one by one, and the Gaffer watched her hands and not her face, which is how he came to lose the wager.
The wager was this: if she could peel a banana before the steam organ finished its hymn, she kept the barrow. If not, she went to work on the carousel, feeding the horses. She peeled it in eleven seconds, and the organ was still on its second verse. The crowd cheered. The brass horses, which had stood bored all autumn, lifted their heads and stamped.
That night Nell sat on the barrow in the dark, eating the last banana slowly. In the morning the Gaffer found the skin on his wagon step, curled up like a yellow boat, and he left it there because nobody on the green could bring themselves to sweep it away.
