Blue and pink roses in a triangle

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

An inverted black-outlined triangle on the forearm holds two large roses, one blue at the top and one pink and red below, with pale leaves around the blue rose. The petals are shaded with smooth gradients and bold highlights, and the saturated colour contrasts with the plain black border. The tattoo fills the frame against a blurred neutral background.

The tin came in on the 6.14 from Carlisle, wedged under a seat cushion where the cleaners had stopped looking years ago. Inside, wrapped in a Keswick bus ticket, were two paper roses, one blue as a gas flame and one the pink of boiled sweets, both pinned to a black card cut into a triangle with its point facing down. Nobody had claimed anything from the shelf since March, so I put the tin on my desk and waited for the usual sorts of people.

Dennis from the signal box came first, then a woman who swore her husband had left his pension book on the 1983 Sunderland service. Neither wanted the tin. The blue rose had a crease running straight down its middle, and the pink one had a soft tear at the base of its petals where someone had pinched it between finger and thumb a great many times. I knew that pinch. My mother did it to her wedding ring every time the kettle boiled.

On the third Thursday a young man in a station fleece asked, very politely, whether we had anything that looked like a pair of roses. He didn't say more than that, and I didn't ask. I handed him the tin, and he turned the card over, read something in pencil on the back that I had never noticed, and laughed in a way that made the ticket office girl look up.

He left the pink rose with me and took the blue one to the platform. From my window I watched him hold it up against the sky above the buffers, the point of the triangle aimed at the rails, until the 17:02 pulled in and he was gone inside its doors.
