Calf · Colour · Photo
A blue cartoon donkey, Eeyore, sits with its head turned to the side, with black spiky mane and tail and a pink bow tied at the tail end. The outlines are bold black and the body is filled with a solid blue wash with some soft shading. The donkey sits centrally on a pale skin background, with a pink inner ear and muzzle and white eyes.

Sit down, you lot, and mind the chairs, because this is about a donkey and the Saturday the Bluebell Rooms ran out of gin. You'll not have heard of it, but in 1958 there was a tin-roofed hall at the end of the pier at Cleethorpes, and the band played until the tide came in. By the far wall, every dance, sat a donkey called Eeyore, blue as a November sky, with a mane like a wet hearth brush and a face that said the band was too loud and the lemonade too warm.

Nobody knew whose donkey he was. Ada Fenwick swore he'd walked up the pier from the sands one wet spring and never walked back down. She tied a pink ribbon on his tail to cheer him up, and he looked at her over his shoulder as if she'd tied it to a lamppost. Still, he kept it. By summer the regulars called him the hall's lucky mascot, though nobody could say what he'd brought luck to.
Then one Saturday the ribbon went missing. Ada searched under the trestles and behind the urn. The band struck up the Lambeth Walk, and the donkey sat there with his head turned to the wall and his bare tail twitching at the flies that weren't there.
It was a Grimsby deckhand who found it, pinned to the lapel of a girl's coat, crushed flat from three hours of dancing. She gave it back without a word, and Ada tied it on again, tighter this time. Eeyore turned his head, just slightly, and looked at the band for the first time in living memory. Nobody saw him go home. But the bow stayed on his tail, and the next morning Ada found it pinned above the cloakroom door, all by itself, as if he'd decided the hall could keep one thing of his.
