Blue classic muscle car on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A blue classic muscle car is shown from the front, with a black mesh grille, round headlights and what appears to be a script badge on the grille. The linework and shading are smooth and photographic, with bright highlights on the bonnet and a warm orange glow behind the car. The design fills the forearm, with a blurred blue background and a checked shirt sleeve visible at the top of the frame.

The car came down the hill on the Tuesday tide, which was the wrong day for it, because the Tuesday tide belonged to the lobster boats and nobody in Carrick Haven had ever seen a motor that colour on the slipway. It was blue the way the sea goes blue when the sun is behind a cloud, deep at the edges and pale across the bonnet where the light lay down flat. Maud Trelawney said it had no driver. Her brother said it had a driver who had gone below to fetch his tea. Nobody believed him, and nobody went to look inside the cabin to be certain.

It sat by the net store for three days with its headlights open like a pair of patient eyes. Children dared each other to touch the grille. The mesh was cool and fine, and it hummed, very faintly, when the wind came off the water from the north. The old harbourmaster, who kept a ledger of every boat and every name that had ever drowned, went through his pages and found no entry that matched it. On the fourth morning the car was gone, and in its place on the stones lay a single coil of rope, tarred and new, knotted into a shape nobody could name.
They say a fisherman's widow tied that knot, and that the car was her husband coming back the only way his pride allowed, which was fast and with the lights on. Maud still keeps the rope in her porch. When the north wind rises she hears the grille humming up the hill, and she goes down to the quay to see who is in the cabin.
