Blue diamond tattoo on the lower abdomen

Other · Colour · Photo

A single blue faceted diamond sits on the skin of a woman's lower abdomen, just above the waistband of black briefs. The gem is rendered with lighter blue highlights on its top facets, darker tones on its lower edges, and a soft shadow beneath it. The composition is a tight crop of the torso, with her red-nailed hand resting on her waist against a plain beige background.

When she drew the first tray, one loaf rang against the tin like a spoon on a cup. She broke it open on the board and found a stone sitting in the crumb, blue as a jay's wing and cut with a hundred small faces. It was cool to the touch even out of the heat. She turned it under the lamp and saw the flour dust settle on its top facets, and under it a darker blue, and a shadow of itself laid on the board.

She could have taken it to the pawnbroker on Sheep Street, or dropped it in the tin with the buttons. Instead she wrapped it in a clean cloth and walked it up to Hobb's mill, where the miller's widow had lost a ring in the flour the winter before. The widow looked at the stone a long time and then said, "Bread that carries a thing like that has to be shared out." So Mrs Hesketh went home with the widow's best cheese and a promise of flour for life.

At dawn she set the loaves along the sill for the village to collect, and the blue stone sat among them, catching the first grey light before the sun had cleared the chimneys.
