Small white pineapple on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small pineapple, with a leafy crown and a body filled with crosshatched texture, sits on the upper back below the neck. The tattoo is rendered in white ink, so it stands out against the darker skin, and the linework is fine and delicate. The close crop shows bare shoulders and back, with a hand resting near the neck and another on the shoulder, and soft light falls across the skin.

Dear Tom,

The rains came early this year and the lower terrace flooded twice, so Father has had us out at dawn lifting the plants onto the stone ridges. You would hate it. The mud gets into everything, even the sugar tin. Mrs Okafor's boy cut his foot on a broken bottle near the sheds and she brought him to our kitchen, and we sat him on the table while I bound it with the clean linen from the press.

The pineapples are coming in pale this season. Father says it is the cloud, but I think it is the soil, the way the white salt crept up from the coast after the storm. The fruit is smaller and the flesh paler than the gold we sold last year, almost the colour of milk. The buyers in town don't care for it, so I've started keeping the best ones aside. I sit on the back step in the evenings and cut a slice with Grandmother's knife, and the juice runs down my wrist in the last of the light.

I've sent you a crown wrapped in waxed paper inside the tin with the sea map. Don't laugh. Twist it off, let the cut dry for three days on a windowsill, then set it in a jar of water until the roots show. Plant it somewhere that gets sun for the whole morning. It will take two years, maybe three, but it will come back to you in the shape of this island, if you let it.

Keep the leaves out of the wind. I'll write when the rain stops.

Your sister, Ada
