Blue flower and vine on a palm
Botanical · Hand · Colour · Photo
A four-petalled flower with pale lavender petals and a glossy blue centre sits at the base of the thumb on a palm. Thin dark purple vines curl out from either side of the flower, with small teal dots scattered along them. The bold outlines are filled with flat colour on pale skin, and the composition is shown against a wooden surface with the hand held palm up.

The wasps had been at the Pitcher plums since breakfast, and by the time Uncle Aled sent me up the ladder with the wire basket, half the crop was split and sweet on the grass. I was twelve and sulking about it. Nobody else in the orchard seemed to mind. The old wall at the far end was furred with a vine nobody had planted, its leaves dark as ink, and every few yards a sky-blue bloom opened out of it like a star someone had forgotten to put back.

Aled said the vine came over the wall the year his father died, and that it only flowered where something had been buried or spilled. I thought he was teasing. He liked stories that sounded like hedge advice. But from the top rung I could see the little teal berries strung along the stems, each one no bigger than a pea, and a bee walking slowly out of the centre of a flower as though it had already decided not to come back.
I picked the berries that afternoon, one at a time, the way he'd shown me, and kept them in my mother's old tin with the faded robin on the lid. The wasps left them alone. When the light went long and gold across the grass, I carried the tin down to the gate, where the lane runs out towards the river, and set it on the post.
In the morning the tin was empty and a single lavender petal lay on the wood, still cool with dew. Aled never asked where the berries had gone. He only said the wall would be fuller next year, and went back to the plums.
