Blue furry monster on the back of a hand
Realism · Hand · Colour · Photo
A large blue furry cartoon monster with bulging pink-rimmed eyes and an open, toothy mouth fills the back of the hand. The fur and skin are shaded with soft gradients of blue, purple and pink, giving the creature volume against the skin. The design is centred and fills most of the frame, with small dark marks on the fingers visible at the edges.

Nobody at the Mariner's Rest had seen the thing arrive, which Dora said proved it was a ghost, and Fenwick the cook said proved only that the bin lids had been left unlatched again. By six on Tuesday it had eaten two pork pies, a tray of cold rice pudding and the cheese off the sandwich board, and it was perched on top of the walk-in fridge looking down at the galley with its pink-rimmed eyes wide as saucers.

Dora wanted to ring the environmental health man. Fenwick wanted a broom. Neither of them could get near it, because every time someone lifted a ladle it opened its mouth, showed a row of teeth like a bag of dropped pegs, and let out a wail so high the glasses in the rack rang. Then it would bounce down, snatch a prawn from the prep bowl, and scramble back up the shelves as if it had been doing this for years.
By nine, the galley crew had given up on dignity. Dora climbed onto an upturned crate with a colander held over her head. Fenwick stood with a fish slice. The creature watched them both with the particular hurt of something that had only ever wanted a sausage roll. Dora studied it for a long time, then sighed and pushed the last one across the steel counter with two fingers.
It took the roll in both paws, sat down on the fridge, and ate it slowly, crumbs tumbling into the sink. When it finished, it gave a small contented burp that rattled the lid off the flour tin. "Right," said Fenwick, lowering the fish slice. "Tomorrow we buy two sausage rolls." Dora said nothing, but she had already added a third to the list.
