The peonies came out all at once this year, the week after Mr Adair's men took down the old cinema sign, so Mother says we are to read it as a sign of something. She has said that about everything since Dad's letter came from Malaya. I have decided to read it as the peonies simply being peonies.

I have been painting again. Miss Pryce at the library asked me to do the endpapers for the village scrapbook, the one with the parish history, and I used the blue ink you left in the drawer, the one that never quite dries right. A crescent moon, low over the chapel roof, with a vine climbing up its horns and pink peonies hanging off it like lanterns. Mother looked at it for a long time and then said the moon was the wrong way up. It is not. It is the way it looked the night you left, when we walked to the bus stop and you said you could see the whole thing in the puddle.

Miss Pryce wants me to write the caption. I have put, "For those who came back late." She says it is too sad for a scrapbook. I said the whole village is sad, and the scrapbook should admit it, the way the flowers admit the frost.

Come home at Whitsun if they will let you. Bring the blue ink. I will leave the vine uncut by the back gate until you do.
