Blue fine line tattoo of three snowflakes, curling swirls and a rounded central shape on the inner forearm near the wrist.

Blue snowflakes and swirls on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows three snowflakes joined by curling, scroll-like lines, with a solid blue rounded shape at the centre. The linework is thin and even, and the snowflakes are partly filled with lighter and darker blue. Everything is set in a single blue ink against pale skin and a dark blue fabric background.

The frost on the sensor glass had grown into the same six-armed shape for eleven days, and Oda Brennan did not trust anything that repeated itself so neatly. She took the scraper and the lamp up the service ladder to the outer ring of the cold-frames, where the air tasted of iron and the walls ticked as the moon's night deepened.

The seed pods sat in their trays under a skin of blue ice. Someone had labelled the trays in the old engineers' hand, but the crystals had spread across the labels and joined them into curling lines, like script that had forgotten its alphabet. At the centre of the largest tray a rounded pod had split along one seam. Inside it, a green thread no thicker than a hair was reaching for the lamp. Her mother's rule was that nothing sprouts in the dark, and she had never once broken it.

She traced one of the curls with a gloved finger and felt the ice give slightly, warmer than it should be. The lines ran downward, not outward, following a seam in the floor that the survey drones had marked as dead rock. Oda pressed her ear to the plating and heard water moving, slow and patient, under the ridge. The frost had been drawing the route for her all along, the way a child draws a map in breath on a window.

She cut a new frame along the longest curl that night and moved the split pod into a cup of meltwater, the lamp steady on its rim. In the logbook she wrote the coordinates, then under them, in the space meant for a serial number, the only name she could think of for the place: Scroll Ten.
