Fine line white ink tattoo of a filigree heart made of swirls on the inner wrist.

Swirling filigree heart on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A heart outline built from looping scrolls and curls sits across the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is pale white or light pink, so the design shows only as a raised, lighter tone on the skin. The wrist fills the frame against a plain magenta satin backdrop, with the design centred.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The function room at the Crown still smells of lager and floor polish, and somebody has left the paper chains up from a Christmas do that must be twenty-five years gone. You stand by the buffet holding a paper plate you have no intention of eating from, watching Dawn Pickering work out your name without asking anyone.

It was Dawn who first showed you lemon ink, the spring of Year Nine, when you were both meant to be doing double science. She dipped a cotton bud in a squeezed lemon from the fruit bowl and wrote on a cream notepad, and the words vanished as they dried. Hold it over the radiator, she said, and everything you'd kept to yourself came up brown and bright. You spent that whole term passing each other pages that said nothing at all until the heat found them.

Now Dawn crosses the room with two glasses of cava and says, "You still doing the paperwork?" Her kindness is the sort that asks questions it doesn't really want answered. Then she opens her purse and unfolds a single sheet, soft as cloth from being carried, with a heart drawn on it in looping scrolls, the ink gone faint and pale. She tilts it toward the lamp, and under the heart the words rise slowly in brown: meet me at the gate, I've got the stuff.

You laugh, and it is the first time all evening that the sound seems like your own. Dawn presses the paper back into your hand. You fold it into the same quarters it came in, heart facing inward, and put it in your jacket where you can feel the edge of it against your ribs.
