Snowflake design across back of hand
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on dark blue lace fabric, with a cluster of snowflake motifs in dark brown or black ink running from the wrist across the back of the hand and onto the fingers. The snowflakes are drawn with fine, symmetrical linework and are linked by a dotted trail that curves down towards the fingers. The image has a soft, even light with a shallow focus on the hand, and a ring is visible on one finger.

He went in at the stile where the path bends like a question mark, and by dusk there was nothing past it but dark. His mother stood at the edge holding a lantern she would not let anyone take from her. Every hour she walked down to the last hawthorn and called his name, and every hour the wood gave back nothing but the drip of melt off the branches.
Then, at midnight, with the moon coming up over the ridge, there were marks in the snow at the stile. Not footprints. Dots, small as peppercorns, running out from the trees in a line, and between each dot a flake had settled, six-armed and perfect, as if someone had stopped to take a breath and count. The mother followed them. She counted the dots aloud the whole way, and she never once lost the line.
The boy was sitting on a stump inside a ring of frost, with the goat asleep against his knee. He said the flakes had shown him the way out, one at a time, each one waiting until he had stepped onto it. Which is the trouble with snow, my loves. It only ever shows you the next step.
