Blue TARDIS on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small blue TARDIS police box sits on the forearm, with its roof lamp, panelled doors and the words POLICE BOX on the sign above the door. The tattoo uses dark outlines and blue shading to give the box a solid, three-dimensional look against the pale skin. The box is centred on the forearm, and a dark sleeve and a black leather chair fill the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Your brother has given you one job that isn't the speech: keep the rings in your inside pocket, keep the vicar away from the buffet, and fetch his cousin back from the field behind the village hall, where she has gone to smoke somewhere she thinks nobody can see. The drizzle has turned the grass to porridge, and your good shoes are already lost to it when you find her.

She isn't smoking. She is standing beside a blue police box with its lamp dark and its door propped open on a folded tea towel. The sign above the door reads POLICE BOX in white letters gone soft with weather. She looks at you the way people look at a man who has wandered into the wrong room at a party. "Somebody left it here," she says. "Nobody's come to collect it."

You step inside to get out of the rain. The room is far bigger than the outside allows, with a brass rail around a console and a clock that ticks in a rhythm you can't quite count along to. Nothing is humming, but the floor is warm under your soles, as if something has only just stopped moving.

When you step back out, the field is dry and the hall windows are full of light. Your brother is standing on the gravel with his hand held out, the way he used to when we were boys and he wanted his football back. "Where did you get to?" he says. You open your palm, and the rings are sitting there, warm from your pocket and entirely unbothered by how long you were gone.
