A teal and blue TARDIS police box sits centred on the calf, with the words POLICE PUBLIC BOX lettered across the top panel. The box has black outlines, shaded panels and lighter highlights, with loose blue wash splashes spreading around it. The photo is taken outdoors from a standing angle, with the leg filling the frame against a grey pavement.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The guard at the crossing at Scarrow Bridge had kept the same post for thirty-one years, and in all that time nothing had come over the river that he could not account for. Lorries, cattle, a priest with a suitcase of hymn books, smugglers who thought he was blind. So when a small blue box appeared on the far bank one wet morning, with a lamp on its roof and its doors shut tight, he walked down the causeway with his stamp in his pocket and rapped on the wood.

A voice inside asked him, politely, whether he was the one who kept the gate. He said he was. The voice said the box had come a very long way and would need to pass through, and could he please check the papers. He asked what papers a box carried. The door opened a crack and a hand held out a card the size of a playing card, covered in tiny writing that moved whenever he looked away.

He stamped it. He could not help himself. Then he asked the question his mother had taught him to ask of anything that came out of the wet: where are you from, and where are you going? The voice said it was from a place that had been and gone, and was going wherever somebody needed it, which was not always where it was wanted.

The next morning the river was the same brown as ever and the causeway was dry, but his stamp was missing from the desk. In its place lay a card in a hand he did not know, asking him to hold the gate a little longer, because somewhere a child was about to be lost and the box had a habit of turning up just in time.
