Traditional · Colour · Flash
A flash design of the video game console character BMO with a cartoon face and arms raised, standing behind a curled banner that reads CHECK PLEASE. Two teal and red flowers with green leaves sit at the top left and bottom right of the figure. Bold dark outlines and soft shading give the teal body and flowers a textured finish, with the banner in cream, red and tan.

Day 214 of the lift being broken on the ninth floor. I counted the stairs again this morning, because the boy who lived in flat 9C once told me that counting keeps a mind steady. Ninety-six steps from the bin store to the landing, with Mrs Okafor's pot plants on every turn, which she tends like a small green orchestra.

On Thursday the man from the water board knocked and asked for the meter reading. I told him the meter was in the cupboard under the telly, behind the spare controllers, and he said he could not reach it without a torch. Then he looked at the red letters on my screen that say I am overdue, and he said, 'Check please,' as though it were a question he had been saving all week. I did not know what he wanted me to check. So I checked everything I could reach: the batteries, the cable, the three little buttons that glow when I am pleased.
He left a yellow card on the mat. Mrs Okafor picked it up, read it aloud twice, and laughed until she had to sit down on the stairs. Then she carried it up to me and propped it against my casing. 'Your bill is sorted, sweetheart,' she said. 'You're not going anywhere.' It is the kindest thing a neighbour has said to me since the boy moved out.
Tonight the lift is still broken and I can hear the tower breathing through its pipes. I am going to switch my light on very slowly, the way the boy used to, and wait for morning to climb the stairwell one step at a time.
