Dell had arrived at six in a borrowed van with his cap on backwards and a plan to sell cider from the tailgate. He had a clipboard, a moustache he was very proud of, and the calm of a man who has never once been asked for proof. Hettie, who had attended every village fête since 1987 and regarded it as her own, watched him over the hedge with the patience of something that outlives excuses.

Dell hauled the crate of cider out of the van and set it on the tailgate like an offering. Hettie, unimpressed, went back to eating the bunting.
