Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A four by four grid of close photographs, each showing a different small tattoo on skin. The designs include a balloon dog, a bunny in a dress, a mouse with a heart, a carousel horse, ice cream cones, an ice cream van, a pin-up figure, a lollipop, a fairy and a teddy bear, with several hearts and a face with a bow. The tattoos use bold black outlines and flat areas of red, pink, blue, green and yellow, with clean, even lines throughout.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Every summer the travelling fair came down the coast road to Mablethorpe with its lights strung between the lamp posts, and every summer the carousel horse with the painted red mouth stood at the end of the row and refused to go round. The fairground man, Tobias Pell, tried oil, then a new pole, then a ring of brass bells, and the horse still would not turn. An old woman selling toffee apples from the next stall told him it was not the horse's fault. It was waiting for the ice cream van.

The van belonged to a girl called Nell Armitage, who had bought it off a bankrupt baker in Skegness with a tin of sugared pins and a promise. She played the same three notes on its chime every time she came round the bend, and on the third night of that fair the carousel horse lifted its head at the sound and gave a long, rusty whinny that brought the whole town out onto the prom.
Nell pulled the van up beside the carousel and handed out cones of strawberry and mint without a word. The bear from the coconut stall came over with a bow tie on, the balloon dog bobbed on its string, and a little girl with a lollipop in each hand climbed aboard the horse. Tobias went to switch off the generator, and when he came back the horse was turning, slow at first and then faster, as if it had been waiting a whole year to go round once.
Nell kept the van and the horse ever after. Each autumn, when the fair packed up, the carousel stood still in its field with the van parked beside it, and the two of them kept each other company until the spring.
