Cartoon character portrait in a scalloped frame

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A bold outlined portrait of a cartoon character with black hair, round glasses and a teal band behind the head, set inside a scalloped frame in pink and purple. The linework is thick and black, with flat, even fills and small highlights on the lenses. A dark floral tattoo is partly visible at the top right of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Harvest Fête at Little Sallow had never once given a prize for anything painted, so when Wendy Ffoulkes entered a cake, nobody thought to stop her. She iced it the night before on her mother's kitchen table, a flat round sponge rimmed with pink and lilac frills like the edge of a good doily. In the middle she piped a face. Black fringe, square glasses with a white shine on each lens, and an expression that suggested she had already heard the question and found it tiresome.

The judges arrived at half past two in a Morris Minor that had to be pushed up the hill. Mr Gorse, who managed the bank and had a cardigan the colour of weak tea, leaned over the table and asked whether the cake was meant to be him. Wendy said it was meant to be whoever was looking at it. That was a lie, and also not quite a lie, because the glasses had a faint teal wash behind them that matched his cardigan exactly, and everyone in the marquee saw it at once.

Mr Gorse laughed so hard he had to sit down on a hay bale. He gave her the rosette for Best in Show and then, to the astonishment of the Women's Institute, bought the cake outright from the cash tin for two shillings more than it was worth. Wendy watched him carry it away on a board like a tray of communion wine. Later, when the bunting came down, she found the board leaning against the tombola table, bare except for the scalloped rim, pink on one side and purple on the other, which she folded into her coat pocket and kept there for the rest of the summer without once explaining it to anyone.
